Does the audio get compressed when exporting directly from Audacity to Audio.com?

Updated over a month ago

No — Audio.com does not compress your audio by default when you export directly from Audacity. The quality of your audio depends entirely on the export settings you choose in Audacity.

What determines the quality of exported audio?

When exporting from Audacity to Audio.com, you’ll be prompted to select:

  • File format (e.g., WAV, MP3, FLAC)

  • Bitrate or compression level (for MP3s)

  • Sample rate and channels (mono or stereo)

Your audio is uploaded to Audio.com exactly as it is exported — no additional processing or compression is applied by the platform.

Recommended formats for best quality

  • Use WAV or FLAC for lossless, full-quality audio

  • Use MP3 (320 kbps) for high-quality compressed files

  • Avoid low bitrates (e.g., MP3 128 kbps) if you want your audio to sound clear across devices

Tip for creators

If you’re unsure which format to choose, WAV is a great starting point — it preserves maximum quality and is supported by all major platforms.
